Chapter6

“I thought that maybe you had killed your wife.”

The words hung in the air as Spencer looked up at Tayla. Was she joking? It took one look to see that she wasn’t. She looked embarrassed as she quickly mouthed an apology to him. She looked as if she wanted to kick herself for what she had said.

“Are you serious? You thought I’d killed Alice? But why?”

Spencer couldn’t for the life of him think what reason she would have to think that way. It wasn’t as if he had said anything along the lines. In fact, quite the opposite, he had called her to help him find her.

Tayla was looking mortified and couldn’t meet his eyes. “I don’t know. My friend put the idea in my head, and then it just lingered there. Really, I’m so sorry. I don’t think that anymore. But…I guess I always have to look at every possibility. But…yeah…I’m sorry. I have no idea why I just told you that either. I’m blurting out all sorts of things these days. I really don’t think that you killed her anymore.”

A thought suddenly struck him. “Is that why you wouldn’t come into my house the other day? Things were all fine until you got to my house, and then suddenly you started acting a little strange toward me.”

It was all starting to make a lot more sense now. The reason why Tayla always seemed so guarded with him. A part of her had actually been scared of him.

“Uh…yeah. Sorry. I didn’t actually realize you’d noticed that. Man, I’m really not good at hiding things,” she said. She quickly looked up and then looked down again.

He wanted to be mad at her. He really did. After all, it wasn’t every day that someone accused you of killing someone. And yet he couldn’t. Despite it all, he found himself laughing. The whole thing was so absurd. He didn’t think anyone had been scared of him in his whole life. Also, she looked so cute when she was embarrassed. He’d never met anyone in his life who couldn’t hide their embarrassment like her before. It was actually quite endearing. She wore her emotions on her sleeve, and it was always easy to see where you stood with her.

“Okay, that’s hilarious. Trust me; I’m the last person in the world that would do something like that.” Then he stopped laughing and put his hand on his mouth. “What’s wrong with me? Why am I laughing? You must think I’m awful. No wonder you thought that about me. It feels so weird to laugh. And wrong. I shouldn’t be laughing with everything that’s going on. This is horrible. I don’t know how to act. I mean, I just don’t know what to do with myself. I feel like everything I do is wrong.” He realized that he was rambling.

“Don’t worry. I know you’re not laughing because you’re happy. I went through something similar with another case about a year ago. And the woman kept laughing hysterically at things that weren’t even funny.
